Don't Worry, Be Happy...
1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
I was getting dark and we were a long was from the truck... 2+ miles. We were on a mountain top and there were two rocky crevasses between where we were and where we needed to be. Darkness fell and I began to worry if I would get back to camp that night. I kept moving faster and faster and eventually I had to stop as the oxygen at 12,000 ft elevation was not enough to keep me going.
My worry turned to panic and I began struggling to keep myself calm. I started out again and the worry built until I was sure something bad was going to me that night.
It took a while, but eventually I saw something that looked familiar in the moonlight. A few minutes later I stumbled into my truck. I spent an hour on a beautiful top overlooking a valley they stretched out for dozens of miles below... and I missed the beauty of it all, because of worry.
Remember the older Bobby McFerrin song "Don't Worry, Be Happy"? I would say the song wasn't written with spiritual truth in mind, but, you can certainly find some in it.
Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don't worry be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don't worry, be happy
If you have ever spent much time about a worrier, you know that they are not happy people.
Worry is like a rocking chair—it's always in motion but it never gets you anywhere. So why do we struggle with it? And what good does it do? Worry is the opposite of faith, it steals our peace, physically wears us out, and can even make us sick. When we worry, we torment ourselves—we're doing the devil's job for him! Worry is caused by not trusting God to take care of the various situations in our lives. Too often we trust our own abilities, believing that we can figure out how to take care of our own problems. Sometimes, after all our worry and effort to go it alone, we come up short, still unable to bring about suitable solutions.
The last verse of McFerrin's song tells us that worry in contagious.
'Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don't worry, be happy
Allow God to have His way in our lives. Trust Him and leave worries behind. Life is a whole lot more joyful that way.
