Personal Treasures
Psalm 119:37
Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.
We were sitting and admiring the guns of all of the hunters were carrying on the hunt. There were guns with very little value, guns worth thousands of dollars and everything in between. Our conversation turned to what the true value was of the guns we carry and own. It was decided that the highest valued guns were those that were passed down from one generation to the next. They were treasured possessions. We also talked about the fact that even though they were worth much more than money would buy, the really only had that to us, they have nothing of true value when our life ends.
There's an old saying/joke, "you'll never see a hearse pulling a UHaul". It's just another way to say, you can't take it with you.
How many times do we hear someone say, "life is short"? I use it all the time in joking around, just before I eat a fattening dessert. But it's true, LIFE IS VERY SHORT and the older you get the more you realize this fact. So then what? Do you believe that you will live somewhere beyond this life? By what basis?
So if this life is so temporary then why work so hard to save up treasures here? God's word says that where our treasure is, that's where our heart will be as well.
There is nothing wrong with good things here in this life, but working so hard to get things takes away from what is really important in life. Here on earth we not only have to work hard to get things, we work just as hard to keep others from taking them from us. The bible instructs this way.
Matthew 6:19-21
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
