SWIMMING IN THE PROP WASH
Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
I've fished salmon a little around the great lakes as well on Kodiak Island Alaska. When trolling on the ocean, off of Kodiak, we would run two lines down a little ways on the down riggers alongside the boat. We would troll along for a while and then look into the prop wash for fish. For those that don't know the prop wash is the area right behind the propeller.
Quite often there would be several salmon swimming right behind the boat's propeller. They would travel along following the boat blindly. When they were there you could drop a lure right in front of them and they would immediately bite and that salmon would become dinner.
In Romans 12, the Apostle Paul warned, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world" because it would certainly lead to death. Fitting in, or conforming, to the world will make it so you are not fitting in with Christ and His family. It's one or the other.
The problem with trying to fit in is, it's seeking pleasure in all the wrong places. You will never be satisfied when you do that. Find your joy or pleasure in Christ. Did Jesus find any joy in this world? No, and neither will those that are truly His followers. Why? Because the world doesn't want to hear about the Gospel message. The world is offended by God's word. The world gets excited about anything ungodly, God's family finds excitement in what God is doing in our world.
Don't follow the world blindly looking for an easy ride in the prop wash of the ungodly. Instead swim against the current of this earthly life and with Christ and His family.
