THE CALL OF TEMPTATION

Proverbs 6:20-24
My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching.  21 Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.  22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.  23 For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life, 24 keeping you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.

Each fall, for several years, I had the amazing opportunity to experience almost the entire elk rut on the Cielo Vista Ranch in Southern Colorado.  We guided from the last of August through the end of September.  The bulls bugled the entire month, but the last week of September it was almost deafening with the screams, groans and bellows of mature bulls.

We mostly used cow elk calls and they were very effective on the bulls.  There were times when the bulls were coming from several directions at one time.  Most of the big bulls we harvested were taken when bulls lost their sense of normal caution and succumbed to the urge to breed....  Coming to the "smooth talk" that they thought was a cow elk... Causing their demise.

All too often this happens to people... We desire something so much it doesn't matter what the danger is, we are going to do whatever it takes to get it.

King David is a prime example of this very thing.  He saw a beautiful woman bathing and allowed his desire for her to override his morality.  To David, his actions on that fateful night seemed trivial, just a momentary pause in an otherwise steadfast life. The consequences, however, were devastating, not just for David, or for Uriah, but also for David's family and the entire nation. The whole nation paid a high price for David's immorality.

In 2 Samuel 12:14, the prophet Nathan passes the bad news on to David of what will happen because he has given in to the "call of sin".

Verse 14 "But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born to you will die."

Like the elk that runs to the call, we will pay a price if we give in to temptation.

Focus on our relationship with God and run from the call of temptation

Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man,  But its end is the way of death.
