ONLY ONE LIFE
Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
As people we have a built in desire to win, to achieve, to accomplish things. Many of us lose that desire over time, but I believe we all started with that God given drive.
I have friends that have such a big desire to harvest the best possible bucks in their area that they will do anything legal to get it done. This afternoon I was working outside with snow blowing horizontally and the windchills around 10 degrees... and I have friends that I know are in their tree stands. That's what it takes to consistently harvest big mature bucks.
Successful athletes are also a devoted bunch and their lives often revolves around the need to continually become better, to achieve greatness, the best they can be. But greatness is fleeting. Greatness in the end is empty.
One of the greatest football coaches of all time, Vince Lombardi, explained what is truly important to his team.
"After all the cheers have died down and the stadium is empty, after the headlines have been written, and after you are back in the quiet of your room and the championship ring has been placed on the dresser and after all the pomp and fanfare have faded, the enduring thing that is left is the dedication to doing with our lives the very best we can to make the world a better place in which to live."
This is an amazing quote from. Coach that pushed his teams to win, and win they did.
Poet, C.T. Studd wrote a poem about what lasts beyond the victories of today. It starts out like this.
"Two little lines I heard one day,
Traveling along life's busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart,
And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, 'twill soon be past,
Only what's done for Christ will last."
When the fanfare dies around you, what will be remembered of your life? Striving to win is great, but if our lives are aren't changing the world for Christ, then all else is empty.
"Only one life, 'twill soon be past,
Only what's done for Christ will last."
