STRONG ROOT SYSTEM

Jeremiah 17:7-8
Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose trust is the LORD. 8 For he will be like a tree planted by the water that extends its roots by a stream, and does not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought, nor cease to yield fruit.

Memorial Day weekend has always been when we put our gardens in.  Since I was a little boy that was the place on the calendar that marked the planting time.  This year we've had a lot going on...  company often and travel...  then there's the whole job thing.   My grandson got most of the garden in for us and now I've got a couple day window to get the potatoes planted.

The plants won't grow too quickly now, even though they are planted in good soil, there are several eyes on each "seed" potato which will turn to stems... but there are no roots because the root systems haven't started yet.  With a good root system the potatoes will produce many times more potatoes than a plant with a poor root system.

So it is with each of us. Many passages speak of the importance of God's people building a healthy "root system".  They all teach us we must let what's in our head sink into our heart. Most people know in their heads about God's unconditional love, but they can't draw that out.  They can't tap into that love, as their root system is not deep enough or developed enough. They remain in the place where their knowledge of God's love doesn't sink in into their heart, and so they have an inability to feed from that truth and grow.

Matthew 13:5-6 talks about the sower and the seed.  In these two verses we read of the seed that fell where there was no place to put down good roots.
"Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and they sprang up immediately, because they had no depth of soil. 6 But after the sun rose, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away" (Matthew 13:5-6)

Get yourself well rooted.  Build your relationship strong with Jesus Christ.  Spend time reading His Word, in prayer and meditating on Him and all He has done for you.  It's only then that your roots will grow strong and your life will flourish.
