SUPERPOWER
Ephesians 3:20-21
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
Many years ago I was out with my grandson, Micah. I’m not sure if we were going fishing or hunting or what we were doing. While driving he asked, "grandpa, if you could have one super power what would it be?". Hmmmm... I really didn't know for sure.
As I consider that question, I wonder what it would be like to have superhuman strength. Or if I could do something that nobody else could do… What would I choose. I believe if I really thought about it I would choose to be the best father, grandfather, friend and man of God that I could possibly be. So what is stopping me?
We read in Ephesians 2, that we already have superpowers! However, we probably rarely ever take advantage of that power. If you had one amazing superpower, wouldn't you put to use? Is it something that you would use to better yourself and your world?
Here’s what Paul wrote to the people of Ephesus…
" exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,"...
Wow! More than we ask or think? And the power is already working in us? Yet how often do we call on Him. We sit on our hands and feel like we can't request of God those things that are good in life. I'm not talking about personal selfish things... But the really "good" things, peace, love, ability to serve, health, provision, etc...
Think about this… What do you have that the Lord didn’t provide? What do you need that the Lord can’t provide?
Our all-powerful, all-loving, all-knowing, living God can provide all truly good things, we just need to request of Him. Don't be afraid to ask... Then if your heart is right... Expect to receive.
In the book of James, the writer tells us what we don’t receive when we ask.
You lust and do not have, so you commit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with the wrong motives, so that you may spend what you request on your pleasures (James 4:2-4)
It seems our superpower hinges on our motives in asking. God wants us to ask, but He wants it for the right reasons… and not for personal gain.
Ask and you shall receive.
