THERE HAS TO BE MORE
Ecclesiastes 1:2-4
"Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless." 3 What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun? 4 Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
For 20 years my friend had chased the dream of harvesting a buck big enough to put his name in the Boone and Crockett Record Book. And then one day it happened. He arrowed a big non-typical buck and later that night when all the adrenaline wore off and all of his excited friends and family went home, he sat alone and thought... "There has to be more".
It's a special week for sports... some NFL players have played their entire career just hoping to win one championship. This is it... it's Superbowl week. That drive to win the Big Game was in the mind of Brett Favre For years. He had played football since he was a young boy and he dreamed of one day winning that "Big Game"... Then it happened.
After retirement Favre gave an interview where he said that when he went back to the locker room after the Superbowl win over the Patriots he thought to himself, "is this all there is". He felt let down and incomplete. There had to be more.
At one point Favre was quoted as saying, "I may be a successful football player, but I feel like such a failure."
"There had to be more".... I think that we are coming to a place in our world, in our lives, where we face this fact. If we are counting on the world to fulfill us, we will always feel like there has to be more. This is why we see the biggest of stars commit suicide... "There had to be more."
There is more. Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes. One of Solomon's favorite words in Ecclesiastes is the word, "vanity." He uses it 38 times. The Hebrew word is "hevel" which means, "emptiness, futility, vapor."
So, whatever disappears quickly, leaves nothing behind, and does not satisfy is considered to be vanity. Never allow vanity to consume your life because things that are vane will not last and have no real value. Stay faithful and do not allow material items become who you are. There has to be more.
There's good news? The world might bring us experiences that are empty, vain and temporal... but the things of God are meaningful, loving and eternal. When we've set our hearts and minds on God, we can be fulfilled. Things of God do not leave us empty, they leave us wanting more, because they build us up.
Colossians 3:1-3 tells us where to set our minds, to be truly fulfilled...
"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God."
