TOSSED BY THE WINDS
Ephesians 4:14
As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by craftiness in deceitful scheming.
I enjoy bird hunting and occasionally I even bring a few home with me to eat. I have to admit that I am not a great shot when it comes to flying creatures. When I was young my dad tried to teach me to shoot on woodcock. He told me, “wait until they get up to where they flatten out in their flight and shoot them there”. It took me many years to figure that out and now there aren’t many woodcock to go after.
I learned a similar trick while hunting pheasants in the plains states. I was told by a guide that when the pheasants get up in front of a hunting dog they, like the woodcock will often pause after getting up above the cover they are flushed from. I got that and I came to realize that when the wind is blowing… they pause even longer. They seem to be tossed by the wind and it makes them more susceptible to be taken by a guy in an orange vest sporting a shotgun.
There is a good lesson in this for those of us that follow Jesus Christ. The scripture tells us not to be “tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine”. There are a lot of false teachers in our world that would like to drag us away from the truth of scriptures. We need to remain squarely in God’s word and not wavering and following other doctrines.
Stay out of the winds that will blow us off course.
