UNUSED PROMISES

2 Peter 1:3-4
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

A long time ago I read a story about Chief Crowfoot, the chief of the entire Blackfoot Indians in southern Alberta, Canada.  Crowfoot gave the Canadian Pacific Railroad permission to cross the Blackfoot land from Medicine Hat to Calgary. In return, all that Crowfoot asked for was that the railroad give him a lifetime pass to ride on the railway. He put it in a leather case and wore it around his neck for the rest of his life. But there is no evidence that he ever used it to travel anywhere on the Canadian Pacific trains.  Crowfoot took great pride in that pass but never put it to use.

We may think that this neglect to use his pass was a terrible waste, but many Christians are just like Crowfoot in not taking advantage for themselves of the unlimited promises, power and love of God. They may put them up on display and even brag about them to others, but practically they never actually use God's promises in their daily lives.

In 2nd Peter 1:3 Peter does a great job of showing us what we have available.

"His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence" (2 Peter 1:3)

We see something interesting in the beginning of verse 3... "God has already given us everything we need.".  It does not say that God will give us; it says God has already given us everything we need.  Pay special attention to that fact, because if you miss it, you won't be able to understand the nature of God's provision.

Chief Crowfoot walked from place to place when he had the promise of a ride.  If we are God's children, we need to call on Him to unlock the promises that He has already given... But not just when we feel we can't do it on our own... it's for all of our needs, always.

This is a great promise made to His children.  Are you His child?  Then put it is to practice.  If your not His child, then get that right first.  Accept the first and most important gift He has given.  The gift of God's son, Jesus Christ.  And the promise...

Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply all your every need according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
