BEING STEADFAST
Ephesians 4:14
As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
They say that on the oceans around parts of Greenland there large numbers of icebergs floating in the ocean. There some very large icebergs and many small ones. If you watch the flows of these icebergs you will see that the smaller ones are moved back and forth by every breeze that blows. They will move in one direction one minute and in a different direction the next. In contrast, the large icebergs remain consistent. They flow with the current and they are not affected by the changing winds.
I've known many people over the years and are like those small icebergs, they move here and there in their beliefs. They will hear one things and think, that's what I believe and a few month later they have changed their thinking and are following a different belief.
And I've also know some that are so strong in what they know to be right that you couldn't move them with a bulldozer. These people we would call "steadfast".
Steadfast, Its Old word English word that combines stede, meaning "place," and fast, meaning "fixed." Steadfast was first used in battle contexts to describe warriors who literally stood their ground, which led to its "immovable".
In the early church, like today, there were many false teachers that were drawing early Christians away from the truth. The apostle Paul wrote this to the church in Corinth...
1 Corinthians 15:58
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
You and I need to be steadfast in our beliefs and our actions. We can not waver from the truth, as God will not be glorified by our wavering.
Hold firm to God's word. When you hear a new idea or teaching, measure it against the steadfast and unwavering word of God.
Those small icebergs that blow back and forth by the changing winds soon are destroyed by being blown against each other and against the bigger, more steadfast, icebergs. Hold firm.
