GIVE ME STRENGTH
Isaiah 40:29
He gives strength to the weary and increases power to the weak.
Many years ago I went for a long hike in the woods with a couple of friends. My friends were actually training their bear hounds, and I was tagging along to spend some time with them in God’s Great Outdoors. It was mid-July, and we started early in the morning and the weather was warm but we didn't think much of it. By late morning the weather had turned very hot and we realized we hadn't brought any water with us. We were several miles from where we had started, and I was in trouble.
Just before noon we crossed a small stream on top of a log. I fell as I got to the far side and when I went down, I got a terrible abdominal cramp. When I tried to get up I got cramps in both legs and arms as well as most of the rest of my body... I was totally immobilized. My friends were able to help me crawl into the shade of a large cedar tree and I laid there unable to move. We had to radio for someone to bring water to us in the middle of that swamp. If I had been alone without a radio, I probably would have died as I was so dehydrated that I couldn’t recover.
It took me an hour of drinking a few quarts of water before I could move even and arm or leg without cramping. The friends knew the area and were able to get a truck within a few hundred yards of us… it still took me a long time to get out and safe.
Like the story of the "Woman at the Well" that water brought me life... But it was a temporary life. My physical body is dying, we all are. But Jesus gives us an amazing strength, the power over not only death when we leave this world, but also power over demonic forces in this world.
Like the water that revitalized my strength, Jesus can lift us when we are struggling to take even one more step, make one more small move in life. He can be all we need to push us through when we need just a little more.
The great evangelist D.L. Moody once said,
"When a man has no strength, if he leans on God, he becomes powerful."
Feeding our bodies with the right nutrition, enough liquids and we can make it for a long time… our spirit is no different, if we don’t feed it with enough prayer and God’s word it becomes weak and will not function. Physical feeding is not much different than spiritual feeding.
Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
When we have nothing left to give, cry out to God, He is the giver of strength.
