MY ROCK
Psalm 18:1-2
I love you, Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
My first excursions into the high country, many years ago, I found something new. As I broke out above timberline I began to hear what I thought were whistles of birds on the boulder strewn hillsides above me. I watched for the birds and eventually used my binoculars to find one of these whistling creatures.
What I was seeing looked like an orange and brown colored woodchuck. With some research I learned more about them. They are a marmot, sometimes called, rock chuck, or whistle pig. In the Bible they are called coneys.
This chubby little "chucks" live in the rocky cliffs in the mountains and they survive by finding refuge in the rocks where the predators can't get good them.
Many of us have heard or read these verses many times in our life. Even as I read them this morning, I read through them thinking in modern terms. The more I thought about it the more I realized that David could relate this to real life. Saul had hunted down David to kill him and he hid in the rocks, like the marmot, to literally protect his life.
Most of us will never have to hide in the rocks to protect our lives. But the time may come where we need a Rock to protect us Isn't it great to know that we can rest on Him and rely on God's strength to protect us in our everyday struggles.
All we have to do is ask.
